Protected and Served? A Community Survey of LGBTQ+ People and People Living with HIV – In 2022, Lambda Legal, in partnership with Black and Pink National, launched the Protected and Served? community survey. With this project, they aimed to learn more about the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ+) people and people living with HIV with the criminal legal system, to assess these communities’ levels of trust in government institutions, and to create a new resource for community members, advocates, policymakers, and researchers. Please join one of the 2023 Report’s main authors to learn more about its key findings and their implications for our LGBTQ DV work and beyond, as well as the Report’s recommendations. The 2023 NY State Education Department Guidance for TGNC Youth – This session provides a review the NYS Education Department’s 2023 updated policy entitled “Creating a Safe, Supportive, and Affirming School Environment for Transgender and Gender Expansive Students,” including the revisions that were made from the previous 2015 NYSED TGNC policy and the legal underpinnings of those changes. We will review potential steps and remedies to undertake if a school is not following this policy, including a review of the NYS Division of Human Rights complaint process. We will also explore how this may intersect with TGNC youth who are experiencing abuse at home or in their intimate relationships.
