In Session 2, various approaches will be explored that support the journey of trauma responsiveness and resilience. Through the lens of the shared impacts of state and world constructs, including the Covid-19 pandemic, a deeper ability to recognize when stress and anxiety are “speaking” through interactions and/or behaviors.

In Session 1, attendees will gain a shared understanding of how stress, toxic stress, and trauma affect the physiology and behavior of both advocates and clients and impact how we navigate all the systems in which we live and work. A common vocabulary will be established, and the principles of trauma informed care will be highlighted as areas of action for adopting trauma-responsive approaches to service delivery.

Join Empire Justice Center and Gregory Jost for a webinar training on understanding the history of race and place in the United States. Have you ever wondered how the practice of “redlining” originated and developed over many decades? Many of the issues our neighborhoods and homeowners of color continue to face are rooted in this historic practice. In this training, you will gain a strong understanding of how historic housing and homeownership policies and practices helped fuel segregation, the racial wealth gap, and many other societal inequalities in New York State. While the issues may seem intractable, you will also learn about and (hopefully) be inspired by the community work during the past century. We will end the training by beginning to consider how Empire Justice Center and HOPP grantees can better incorporate this historical context into the design of our response strategies to advance equity in homeownership in our communities. This program, previously recorded April 14, 2022, will provide an overview of what foreclosure advocates need to know regarding the student loan crisis, including the most recent updates from the Biden Administration on the resumption of student loan repayments and COVID-19 relief. Advocates will come away from the program with a better understanding of the current federal and private student loan landscape, so as to counsel homeowners struggling with education debt. Finally, the presentation will cover how to choose the best student loan repayment option, how to apply for various loan forgiveness programs, and how to report problems to federal and state regulatory agencies overseeing these issues.

A Discussion of the Governor’s Blue-Ribbon Commission Report on Forensic Custody Evaluations

In December 2021, the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Commission on Forensic Custody Evaluations concluded its work and issued a report to the Governor outlining their findings, ongoing questions for consideration, and recommendations. The Commission’s charge was to develop recommendations to the Governor regarding if and/or how forensic custody evaluations should be used in the New York State court system. Commission members include former judges, academics, attorneys practicing family and matrimonial law, children’s rights experts, domestic violence advocates, psychologists, and parents. The recommendations in this report, if adopted, have the potential to significantly alter the legal landscape for custody litigation throughout the state.

Reverse Mortgage Foreclosures – Stay in the Know

Reverse mortgage foreclosures have become as commonplace as forward ones and foreclosure defense practitioners and housing counselor advocates should be well equipped on how to assist elderly homeowners who are at risk of losing their home to foreclosure. This presentation will provide attendees with a basic overview of reverse mortgages including reverse mortgage eligibility at origination, what homeowners need to know to avoid a reverse mortgage default and ways to prevent a foreclosure should a default occur. Advocates will also learn what defenses to foreclosure may be available and how to resolve a reverse mortgage foreclosure action.
