We Teach the Law

Welcome to the Empire Justice Training Center. As part of our mission, we “teach” the law and are committed to providing civil legal services providers, nonprofit advocates, and others with practical, relevant and interactive training to support their advocacy on behalf of people who are impoverished, disabled or disenfranchised. We focus on creating diverse learning environments that are interactive, accessible and engaging.

Empire Justice Center is an accredited provider of Continuing Legal Education (CLE) since 1998. Our accreditation encompasses trainings in live and virtual formats.

Fifteen years ago, the hard-won amendment to Family Court Act Section 812 to include persons “who are or have been in an intimate relationship” became law. However, in amending the statute in 2008, the NYS Legislature left it to the courts to determine which relationships were to be deemed “intimate” and to consider, on a case-by-case basis, the nature and type of relationship based upon factors detailed in the statute.

This presentation, previously recorded 12/11/2023, will provide a basic explanation of how these two programs fit together for individuals living with HIV that are eligible for both Medicaid and Medicare (dual eligibles), with special emphases on the Medicare Part D drug benefit and how to best coordinate that coverage with other public health programs in New York State, like ADAP, EPIC and Medicaid. We will also discuss the problems clients are likely to encounter in applying for the Part D’s low-income subsidy and identify advocacy strategies to maximize help with prescription drug costs.
