Tax Advocacy Program

The Tax Advocacy Program represents low-income Monroe County residents facing IRS problems and related New York State tax issues. We also teach new Americans about our tax system and advocate for systemic changes that will make state and federal tax administration fairer for all.

What We Don't Do

The Tax Advocacy Program doesn’t generally provide tax return preparation. For free tax preparation by IRS-certified volunteers, contact Empire Justice Center’s CASH VITA program. Call (585) 900-1004 to make an appointment.

Tax Advocacy Program also does not handle property, county, or school tax issues, and we don’t take on business clients unless they’re sole proprietors with no employees.

Request an Appointment

Please reach out for help by emailing taxes@empirejustice.org or calling us at (585) 900-1024. Someone will respond and let you know what we can do for you. Even if we’re not able to take you on as a client, we may be able to give you advice about your tax issue.

Resources

Both the IRS and the New York State Department of Taxation & Finance website have many self-help features for people trying to figure out a solution to their tax problem on their own. The Taxpayer Advocate Service website is designed to help people with IRS problems, and many find it useful and informative. On it, you can find explanations about common IRS notices, as well as a tool to register a complaint about any systemic IRS issue you’ve noticed.
