Q. I am working but having trouble paying my child care costs. Is there any help for me?
Yes. The state has made $20 million dollars available to help essential workers pay for child care during this COVID-19 crisis. This is called the CARES Child Care Scholarship Program
Q. How do I discover if I am an eligible essential worker?
A list of who is considered an essential worker is at https://esd.ny.gov/guidance-executive-order-2026. Essential workers include not only medical workers, but also
- Airport and hotel workers;
- Grocery store and convenience store workers;
- Restaurant workers doing take out;
- Food productions an agricultural workers
- Those who work in bicycle or automobile repair;
- Mail, transit and delivery workers;
- Workers in homeless shelter, food banks and congregate care facilities;
- And many, many more – check the list on the website if you are not sure.
Q. I applied for child care assistance once before and was told I made too much money. Why should I apply now?
Eligibility levels are expanded to 300% of poverty (see chart below) and there are no co-payments at all!

Q. I already receive a child care subsidy. Is there any benefit to applying?
Yes. If you are an essential worker and receive a child care subsidy, the scholarship will pay your co-payment for the duration of the program.
