2018 State of the State

Empire Justice Center was pleased to see a number of our own priority issues highlighted in the Governor’s State of the State address, and we look forward to working with the Governor and the Legislature over the course of this year’s budget negotiations to secure positive solutions for low income New Yorkers.

We were very happy to see several proposals to strengthen the rights of New Yorkers in the State of the State presentation. We strongly support the continuation and expansion of the Liberty Defense Program in order to continue to protect the rights of New York’s immigrant communities, as well a commitment to enacting the DREAM Act. Empire Justice is also committed to the advancement of rights for transgender New Yorkers and we agree with the Governor that this year the regulations which protect transgender and gender non-conforming New Yorkers from discrimination should be codified into law.

Empire Justice believes New York must invest in our children, and we support the proposals to ensure that kids are able to get nutritious breakfasts and lunches at school, free of stigma, as well as the proposal to ensure children are not poisoned by lead in their homes.

Empire Justice also welcomes investments in nonprofit capacity building and leadership.

There are a number of other important proposals that would greatly strengthen the lives of low income New Yorkers which we hope to see in the Executive Budget, chief among them increased funding for child care subsidies for working families and additional investment in homelessness prevention in the form of a shelter and fuel supplement that would help keep struggling New Yorkers in their homes and off the streets.
