Welcome to the August edition of our newsletter, Policy Matters. In this edition we cover the release of our new shelter allowance report, letters of support for housing and public benefits bills, the latest from our police reform project, a conference on victims’ services, and upcoming staff recognition.
The 2021 legislative session was both challenging and rewarding. Challenging because the pandemic made it harder to organize and interact with colleagues and legislators. Rewarding because we achieved major victories for low-income and marginalized New Yorkers in spite of the challenges.
This report exposes that there are no safe and habitable units priced below the Public Assistance “shelter allowance” and state supplements fail to bridge the gap, creating housing instability and homelessness for public assistance recipients.
